Gay and Happy

How is it that even in this day and age, there’s still opposition to the right for a gay couple to be legally married?

As humans, we’ve come a long way (depending on your point of view) and you would have thought that everyone is now treated equally, regardless of age, sex, sexual orientation or race. Ultimately, we’re all the same inside, right?

Alas, there seems to be one final, ridiculous little hurdle.

A young person can marry an old person and a white person can marry a black person- what does it matter if both people are in love? It matters even less, if the couple are happy and their relationship has no bearing whatsoever on anyone else.

So why is it that two men, or two women, who love each other and want to marry each other, can still not be legally married? Sure, there’s civil partnerships, but that’s just legal recognition of a relationship and isn’t really much different to a common-law relationship.

I don’t give a shit about anyone’s sexual orientation; if two people love each other, they should be able to get married regardless of their sexual orientation. It seems that a combination of social prejudice, prehistoric views and ancient laws dictate whether a gay couple can become married or not.

Finally though, we could be heading in the right direction.

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill will now go to the House of Lords- if this is successful, it’s hoped that gay marriages can start to take place before next summer.

Believe it or not, it’s David Cameron who’s put this forward. That’s right, the bloke who’s always being accused of fucking up the country is doing something which is a logical step forward. I’m sure that in a few years time, everyone will have forgotten that bit.

161 MPs opposed the bill- that’s a lot of people by any standard. I’d be really interested in hearing possible reasons for being opposed to this. You’d need to be incredibly small minded to believe that you have a genuine cause to object.

Imagine being with someone you love but being told that you can never marry that person, just because they have the same reproductive organs as you. It really is crazy when you put it like that.

I genuinely hope that this time next year, we’ll start to see same-sex marriages. It’s wishful thinking, but perhaps one day in the distant future, gay couples will even be allowed to get married in a church. Crazy, huh?

Do you have more rights to marriage because you have different reproductive organs to the person you love?
